 A Real Taste of Food Writing - Friday the 24th of February 10am to 4pm

This ultimate foodie master class, which will take place in the upstairs private dining room at Guy Awford at The Guildford in Greenwich ( www.theguildfordarms.co.uk), combines a special three – course lunch, a tour of the kitchens and a Q&A with the acclaimed local chef and restaurateur with a unique insight into food writing from Guild of Food Writers member Nikki Spencer.

Guy Awford at The Guilford is the latest venture by the chef who made his name with Inside ( www.insiderestaurant.co.uk), ³the place to eat in Greenwich² which was voted one of the top 3 Best Modern British Restaurants under £45 in Harden¹s London Restaurant Guide 2011. Both Inside and Guy Awford at The Guilford use ingredients from local suppliers who share Guy¹s passion for freshness and quality. Guy writes a monthly recipe column in The Guide magazine and also has his own blog (guyawford@wordpress.com).

Nikki Spencer is an experienced freelance journalist and media tutor and teaches regularly at Greenwich Community College. She worked as a reporter on numerous Channel 4 and BBC TV consumer shows before going behind the scenes and producing TV programmes including prime time Sophie Grigson series Taste of the Times. She has written about food for numerous national newspapers including The Guardian, the Independent and The Telegraph and until recently was the main UK reporter for Michelin¹s website ViaMichelin interviewing everyone from Marcus Wareing to Michael Caines and writing about everything from supper clubs to sloe gin.’

Cheese tasting at The Guildford Arms with The Cheeseboard

The Cheeseboard is hosting a cheese tasting Tuesday, 24th January 6.30-8pm. We will learn how to taste cheese, what the different styles of cheese are, and the basics of cheese-making. Most importantly we will be sampling several different cheeses and comparing and contrasting them.
Stay for dinner, and receive a 20% discount on all food.

New owner Guy Awford (chef-proprietor of Inside, just down the road) has brought big changes to The Guildford, the first of which is adding ‘Arms’ to the name. The huge garden has also been overhauled, with a new lawn & seating for 100. Within, the ground-floor bar & dining room now look better & brighter than in the previous offbeat French incarnation, & upstairs a proper restaurant is being readied. Awford’s food, so popular at Inside, has been loosened a little to suit the gastropub crowd, who can enjoy starters such as Malaysian grilled tiger prawns with cucumber, lime, coriander & chilli jam. Mains on the weekly changing menu might include grilled swordfish with caponata. A strong selection of beers – the likes of Sharp’s Doom Bar & Harveys Best Bitter – means drinkers will not feel neglected.
